Last Man Standing by Stephen Leather

I sometimes switch between a Lee Child book and another of my favourite authors just because they are written at different times of the year. I realised that I had’t read a Stephen Leather book for a whilst as he was my usual “go to”, once I’d finished one of the Jack Reacher books in the Lee Child series. Last Man Standing – Any Good?

When an author brings in a new younger main character, you get slightly worried, as there are bound to be comparisons to the character that you first started the series with. This new character Matt Standing is absolutely brilliant. Hard SAS soldier who leaves a whirlwind of destruction behind. If he has to sort something out, he will stop at nothing to defend one of his own. Normally I’d wait until the end of a review to explain why you should buy this book but I’ll just say it now, “BUY IT”!!! HERE LAST MAN STANDING

Good things in this book?

The plot got me straight away as I finished the book within 4 days of reading (mainly at night due to work). I really needed to know what happened to Matt Standing’s best friend and whether Standing was going to survive until the end of the book. The plot starts with Standing on a mission that goes wrong and requires one of his team to put their own life at risk to protect them. Fast forward and Standing gets a call to say that this same team member (Navy Seal) is on the run from the Russians and the FBI as he has killed some bodyguards and members of the government. As with most of the books like Jack Reacher, this has a fast paced plot that feels like a 90 minute film. From page one there isn’t any dull moments, each page gripping you until the abrupt conclusion. Is Matt’s friend a killer and if so what has made him this way?

Why is this book like Jack Reacher novels?

A one man army who ventures both through the UK and USA creating a storm of deaths behind him. This sounds a lot like Jack Reacher who is known to do the same in the famous Lee Child book series. Matt Standing has a special nack of being in any combat situation and keeping calm, seeing the story play out in front of him and taking the initiative. Whether that is biting someones ear off, shooting someone point bank in the head, he feels like if it gets the job done then he will do it. When you realise he is up against some big players as in the Russian spetsnaz (Russian SAS) and the super rich who can track you at any moment as money is no expense, Matt has to find unconventional ways to try to survive. If you like Jack Reacher earlier books, you will really enjoy the rough raw fight scenes, the gritty dialogue and the character development that takes place along the way between the lead character and an old friend from the SAS called Spider Shepherd who was the original main character that author Stephen Leather started with.

Is this book better than Lee Child Jack Reacher Books?

I must admit this book is very good, Stephen Leather is a brilliant author and has created a really interesting character in Matt Standing. There are lots of similarities to Jack Reacher in that Standing can look after himself, hates the sense of injustice, investigative and can leave a trail of destruction. He is also very confident in his abilities which is what Jack Reacher portrays when he is up against it. I would say that it is better than some Jack Reacher books, not all of them but up there with some earlier Lee Child novels due to the rough feel of the fights and dialogue.

The New Lee Child Book – PAST TENSE (Jack Reacher 23)

I have taken a little while to write this review of the latest Jack Reacher book. Being a Jack Reacher fan, I wanted to make sure that I didn’t just jump to a conclusion straight after reading it. I wanted to check that after reading 22 Lee Child novels, I didn’t want to confuse previous books in the Jack Reacher series with this book, as we all know Jack Reacher has changed kind of evolved since the first book in the series “Killing Floor”.

PAST TENSE – The Review

After waiting a whole year between reading the last Lee Child book titled Midnight Line – SEE REVIEW HERE, I have had the opportunity to look at lots of other books that have really good strong characters in that are like Jack Reacher. Now my thoughts of the previous book were that it was good, not the best Jack Reacher book but as with any Lee Child book a decent read. This is my issue with the latest Jack Reacher book “Past Tense”, I’ve been used to the old Jack Reacher character, fast paced, act now sort the consequences out later, a guy who was a force of nature in any situation. Now the new Reacher is maybe a tad ponderous, slightly slower pace. Still hard as nails but would rather sort things out by thinking things through.

Now there is nothing wrong with the new Reacher, nothing at all. The book is a great read, the plot keeps you guessing the characters are intriguing yet there is something that seems to be missing from this latest book.

What’s the Good?

The good as is always the Lee Child writing. The classic description of vast land, roads and where they could lead. Even the sense that you are in the open spaces ready to look out and choose your own path whist in the USA. I love this part of Lee Child books, the descriptive characters and the way that they interact, you can almost generalise who these people are without even meeting them.

The plot is also clever, I won’t spoil it for anyone who hasn’t read the book yet but Jack Reacher is wondering as usual where to go next. He sets out on an road trip across America but doesn’t quite get very far. In the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been – the town where his father was born. When he arrives at the town, he is told no one named Reacher ever lived there. Straight away you think why would people lie about this? And then you are into the book, clever Lee Child eh!! The other part of the plot is that there is a young couple trying to get to New York City who stop off looking for a hotel and wander into a motel in the middle of nowhere. They then become trapped as their car won’t start and you know that this isn’t going to end well.

Lee Child weaves these two stories together really well and this is what kept me reading as I was interested to know about Jack Reacher and his family heritage.

Is this book like any movies?

If you have read anything on my website before, you already know that I am an action movie fan. I know the books which liken to a movie and this latest book by Lee Child is no exception. Straight away as the plot thickened at the Motel and the young couple became more and more intense, I pictured a film. Jean Claude Van Damme (remember him) starred in a 90’s film titled “Hard Target”. Now Hard Target was a well directed film by John Woo who at the time was one of my favourite directors. The plot of the film is that Van Damme is forced to join a game whereby trained hunters have to kill him. Cue lots of high Van Damme kicks, shocked facial expressions and crazy action stunts. This film and the plot is quite similar to the latest Jack Reacher book called “Past Tense”. Yes watch it and see for yourself and let me know if you agree with me.

What is the Bad?

There isn’t really anything bad in the book, for me the author Lee Child doesn’t really write any bad books. All Jack Reacher books have been either Amazing or great/good. This one doesn’t quite fit into the Amazing category, not because it hasn’t got good parts to it, more the fact that Lee Child has so many top books that this just doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of the others. This is going to happen when you have written 23 books with the same character as we are all comparing each latest one to our personal favourite.

One thing that I found in this book was the pace of the plot. For me it was slightly too slow but this does help with the setting of the various scenes so that we can picture what certain areas and towns are like. We can even imagine what lifestyle the people have just from the pace of the book and the low interaction between certain people in the community. The last section of the book picks up pace, mainly due to Jack Reacher being on the hunt which is really what we all want to read, its maybe that this latest Lee /child book takes a little while to get there.

Conclusion

Great fights, Reacher family history and classic bad guy menace does mean that I like this book. I don’t love it but would buy it as a fan and also as a present for one of my friends. There was a slight air of dissatisfaction once I had finished it, mainly as I knew that it was going to be another year until I got to read another Lee Child book but also because I had put so much anticipation into this that it perhaps didn’t reach my high level of excitement.

You as a Reacher fan will buy the book, lets face it that is just what we do. I just have this slight nagging sense that maybe the game has moved on, Jack Reacher (speaks quietly) may be getting a little old now or maybe I just have too high expectations.

A brilliant alternative book series that I have really enjoyed so far is Victor the Assassin by Tom Wood. SEE THE BOOK REVIEWS HERE

John Grisham Thriller

I hadn’t read a John Grisham book for a while, so whilst waiting for the latest Jack Reacher book I thought I would delve back into one of my previous favourite authors. I got the book off a family member who had already finished reading it and suggested that I take a look as they knew it might be something I would enjoy.

Once I started to read the book, I did wonder why I had not read any of the John Grisham novels for a while. As with any of the good authors like Lee Child, John Grisham really does create good plots and characters that entice you into the book within a matter of minutes.

Are John Grisham books any good?

I personally think that John Grisham writes some of the best crime thriller books around at the moment. The books have enough mystery and suspense to keep any Jack Reacher fan happy. I remember one of the books that I got for my birthday back in 2013 called the “Litigators”, I couldn’t put it down. Needless to say the family were not happy on when I didn’t really interact with them during the day as my nose was in the book for the whole of my Birthday. If you love legal, mystery books with lots of suspense, you would have to look at this book to start off with.

The very clever writing of John Grisham really outlines the smallness of the firm that is portrayed here and the way that they take on a larger firm who are using high class professional lawyers is a great sight to behold. There are elements of the Erin Brokovic movie in this storyline, but the small firm are not “Holy than thou” as they have a few shall we say behind the scenes illegal moments that surprise you.

What about the Whistler book?

I must admit this booked started off well with brilliant characters that you wanted to get to know more about and a great plot situation that seemed like it was really going to grip you in the first few chapters. The book starts with Lacy Stoltz, an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is looking into an alleged corrupt judge, which I think has a slight twist in the plot as this is something that isn’t usually investigated. We all expect judges to be clean and true in their role. John Grisham as with all great mystery books, lets us look at a judicial system in a whole different light. Can a judge be corrupt and who does the investigating of a judge? Good questions are asked in this book.

I do think that as the book went on, something happens to one of the main characters, I’m not going to spoil the plot but I do think it really sets the book back in terms of pace and atmosphere. Once this incident happens the whole book sorts of slows down and then comes towards an amicable conclusion.

Would you recommend this book?

There is a great female lead character in this book, who is strong and really sets the tone of book from the out set. If you have cravings for the gap in between the next new Jack Reacher book then I would seriously recommend this book to use as a filler. Even with the plot slowing down at the end, this book is still a great read. Go to my buy the book here page to get this book at a low price.

Conclusion

I’m going to be slightly controversial here, as I do like the John Grisham books, hopefully I’ve pointed this out to you. The only thing that is missing, for me, is the action man the hard core fights and tension. With a crime thriller book I want to be tense, I want to be surrounded by mystery, I want to route for the underdog and be urging to finish the book as soon as possible.

I can’t say that I do that with many of the John Grisham books, to me they are good reads, nice books, crime thriller, yes in a NICE way. Are they like Jack Reacher novels, not really, very descriptive and fun to read but if you like Jack Reacher and Lee Child then I would go for the Michael Connelly books. The “Lincoln Lawyer” book which was made into a film, is gritty, action packed and still had the legal courtroom drama, if that is what you are after.

So to finish, YES go and look at the John Grisham books as they are good reads, but as a Jack Reacher fan, and I am promoting books like Jack Reacher. Then keep in mind the Micheal Connelly books which are some of the best crime thriller books written ever.

Books like Jack Reacher review – HERE and GONE

I’m going to level with you. This book is not like Jack Reacher, it’s not my normal type of book to read but it is a crime thriller book with lots and lots of suspense and mystery. You may ask “so why did you read this book” and to be honest, I was just searching through Amazon looking for a great thriller book with good reviews.

I have read all the Jack Reacher books and decided to order Jack Reacher books from the beginning of the series book 1 to go through them again.

This book had good reviews and the basic references from my top authors Lee Child and Greg Hurwitz made me think this could be a brilliant read.  So if you do like any of the Jack Reacher books then this could be for you.

What’s the plot?

Now this is what has got my attention, from the first page you realise a young woman is running away from someone, with her two children in an old car. We don’t know what she is running from but is really scared, she is also avoiding the police which makes you think that maybe she might not be the hero we think.

Audra has finally left her abusive husband. She’s taken the family car and her young children, Sean and Louise, are buckled up in the back. This is their chance for a fresh start.

Audra keeps to the country roads to avoid attention. She’s looking for a safe place to stay for the night when she spots something in her rear-view mirror. A police car is following her and the lights are flickering. Blue and red.

Is this anything like a Jack Reacher book?

As with all the Lee Child books, the writing style of Haylen Beck is very similar in defining the scenery, the short sentence tension but also the crafting of characters that make you either despise them or champion them. Like the Jack Reacher books, you have a craving to finish the book as soon as you pick it up, you really want to see what happens to Audra. There is also a character that gets introduced during the book who has a similar disposition to Jack Reacher, tough guy, ready for action and a real conviction to protect the innocent. I really liked this additional character as it then started to spill over into more of a book like the Lee Child novels which as you know I am a fan of.

Final Thoughts

I read this book within two days, it might not seem fast for some people but for me the time just seemed to whiz by, I can only put the comparison to a film I watched a while back. The film was only a 90 minutes long but keeps you with your hand in your mouth due to the tension that is built. The film is called “Breakdown” and stars Kurt Russell. This is also about a couple who have a car breakdown then when a helpful lorry driver comes along to help he takes the wife to the nearest town so they can call for help. Whilst Kurt Russell is waiting for help to come and his wife, time just floats on by, no help and no wife. He then works out how to fix his car (it’s just a dodgy wire) chases down the lorry driver who proceeds to tell him he doesn’t know who he is or his wife and has never met them in his life. Cue tension, killings, did I mention tension and lots of what has happened. You can buy the film here!

 

 

 

So this book is on the same wave length as this film – so if you like the film, like the sense of tension and the idea that you don’t know what is going to happen within a great plot, then buy this book now.

Introducing a new author – Tom Wood

On my last post where I was totally and utterly shocked and surprised to find a book that might have just surpassed Lee Child’s Jack Reacher character. I decided to keep going with this series.  I kept on buying the “Tom Wood” books and storing them up to read and review thoroughly,  this Victor assassin series.  I was slighty anxious as I had read “A Time To Die” (the more recent book in the series) and had reviewed that on this website.  I didn’t want to feel that this first book in the series would be a let down or not on par with the more recent books in the series.

What just happened?

I went straight into the bookshop and bought the first book of the series titled “The Hunter”. Now I was starting to think, “Oh no” have I rushed with the rave reviews on my website and put the recommendations out too early for people to buy “A Timetp Die”. Yes “A Time to Die” is one of the best crime thriller books that I have read, perhaps debatable, but in my humble opinion its better than all the books in the Lee Child series.

Okay, What about “The Hunter” Book?

Well the back of the book says:

There you go, great back of the book synopsis, surely this is something that you, like me thought “Yes, this seems like it could be a good book”. After two chapters of reading “The Hunter” I was quietly smiling to myself, trying desperately to find negatives as I was reading but at the same time just agreeing that this was going to be another mighty fine read.

General idea

To try and understand the plot without spoiling it for people, I as a previous Jean Claude Van Damme fan (apologies I was a teen martial arts fan) there was one stand out film that this book brought back to my memory. The film was called “HARD TARGET” (BUY HERE) and was basically Van Damme, accidentally entering into a game where the hunter became the hunted. To be honest the film now looks a little dated and probably has “B” rated action, the plot though is really rather excellent. Specialist baddies, chasing after Van Damme who uses his ex army skills to defend himself and fight back. This is what Victor the assassin does in this book like Jack Reacher, being chased by deadly hardened trained teams who go up against him, with the intent to kill.

Tell us the good

I defy anyone to read this book and not finish it within a week! Bold statement I know and I am being deadly serious.  The amazing pace, the twists and turns, the locations, all lead to a dramatic ending which leaves you just absolutely exhausted. We get to understand Victor, strange morals, thinking for himself, he really is about self-preservation. Even with all this going on, men reading this book will want to be him, cool in situations, always thinking ahead of the game, paranoid and observant, a cross between Jack Reacher and Jason Bourne. Perhaps the ultimate assassin you would say in some ways.

Okay you’ve convinced me

The reason this book is just like Jack Reacher is that again the author Tom Wood writes with such detail that you really feel like you are in the scenes. Jack Reacher isn’t exactly a hero and he does have strange morals, which relates slightly to Victor. For some reason you are routing for Victor even though he isn’t one of the good guys in a typical sense.  You are practically willing him to get through to the end of the book.  Even when everything is stacked against him and he is against some serious opposition, you are never sure he is going to make it.

I love the way that Victor even with all the skills in the world can still look and sound vulnerable. To me this is realistic, with so many enemies, so many tight situations that he has to think in an unconventional way to escape or not get killed.  With this high el meant of danger and the sublime pace of this plot, I do put this book firmly up there with a high score like the best Lee Child, Jack Reacher novels.

New Lee Child Book

November is the date, remember the month NOVEMBER 2018 people.  “What’s happening in November” you may ask.  For some people its probably of no significance but to me and over 100 million others, it is the date of the  new Lee Child book.  For the people who read the latest Jack Reacher novels, this November date can’t come round quick enough.  Once you have binged on the latest Lee Child book, you are already searching google frantically to find the date of the next new Lee Child novel.

Whats happening?

Well we know the new Lee Child book is going to be called “Past Tense” and will be the Jack Reacher book number 23.  We have seen the front cover and we are excited beyond belief, the classic front cover with the sentance “We all need Jack Reacher”, he will be back soon!

Would really appreciate what your thoughts are on the book, Reacher again randomly drifting round, then stumbling into a place he recognises as his father’s, delving into the history of his father, no record of the surname Reacher back at his father’s ancestral home. Cue lots of interagation, fights against people who don’t want him to know the truth and maybe a team up with someone from the past.  Yes this could be a brilliant crime/thriller read and one that could propell this new Lee Child book character back to where he belongs – number 1.

Favourite Jack Reacher Book

My all time Favourite Jack Reacher Book

There may be some of you thinking out of the 22 Lee Child Jack Reacher books, which one is your favourite?  For most of us die hard Jack Reacher fans, I think it would be hard to choose just one book that stands out from the rest as they are all so, so good in their own unique way.

With that said however, there is one book that for me, will always stand out in the series of Jack Reacher novels.  This is due to the fact that this was the book that got me hooked into the Lee Child Jack Reacher novels.  I got given it after Christmas by my father in law, kind of a flippant “here you go, have a read of this” comment as he hadn’t had a chance to read it.

Just the back page of the book got me intrigued, why had I never heard of this person before?  Why would no one mess with him?  Why did he leave the army?

What happened next?

I got the book and devoured it, reading it in the morning with breakfast, at night over tea, before bed, you name it.  Whenever I had the opportunity to read the book I did.  To me it was just an instant classic, Jack Reacher teaming up with four of his ex army colleagues as his old team are getting picked off, one by one.  The team are just so  cool, all with their own skill sets, and they have obviously got a  tight bond between them of loyalty from being in the army.

Why is this the Best?

Fight scenes – check

Third person writing – check

Lots of characters – check

Plot twists and turns – check

This book has got everything and more, it was the first time that I got to know the hero but not as a normal hero.  No Jack Reacher is an unconventional hero who walks close to the line with the law by protecting his team and the underdogs but also wants justice done by any means possible.

Once I had been gripped by this book, I decided to research and look at what else Lee Child had written – low and behold, there were another 10 books to read before this one.  I felt that I then had to read the Jack Reacher books in order, so that I could start to see where he had come from, and follow his fictional journey from the beginning.  I think being a kid in the 80’s the Jack Reacher books reminded me ever so slightly of David Banner, the end scenes of the hulk tv series.  David Banner, a loner, walking down a road, piano music playing in the background as he wanders off into the next location.

If like me you want a “do not put down book”, look no further than this Jack Reacher novel.

Stephen Leather – Takedown book review

Wow, just started reading this new book from Stephen Leather and already I’m hooked….

This time no Spider Shepherd but long term ally Lex Harper. This book is so far gritty, engaging and the plot is amazing. A British Special Forces operative goes rogue! Queue lots of action, double crossing, twists and turns plus lots of fights.

Just like Lee Child books where you start one page at 11pm, look again at the clock and its 1am and you have read 5 chapters. You just want to know whats going to happen after every page turned.

Synopsis

Just to update, finished the book and wow, loved it.  Really different style to Spider Shepherd as Lex Harper hasn’t got the same moral character but he gets the  job done more efficiently.  Would definitely read this if you have finished the last Lee Child book and are waiting for the latest Jack Reacher book.

WHAT?

I love reading books.  I just enjoy getting into a new series and following that character throughout each story.  One of my all time favourite authors is Lee Child.  The way that he writes the Jack Reacher series had me hooked when I first borrowed book number 11 – (Bad Luck and Trouble) from the inlaws.  Since then I have read the rest of the Jack Reacher series.  Every single November I get a little annoyed that I have finished the latest book and have to wait another year for the next Lee Child new release!

WHY?

This site has been designed to help people who like me want to know what other great crime and thriller books are out there.  Similar books that have the type of Jack Reacher storylines, which keep you hooked in and help you immerse yourself in their fictional world.

I read them, review them and recommend them to you so you don’t have to waste your time searching for books only to find that they are not all they are cracked up to be.  Honest reviews on here by me, who is passionate about reading and want other people to enjoy this hobby as much as I do.  If you are looking for a book like Jack Reacher then we are the place for you.
